Montaigne's fame rests on his Essays (Essais), a collection of a large number of short subjective traetments of various topics. He believed that studying himself meant studying mankind. So, he not only expressed his judgements of his contemporaries and the great figures of the past, he also noted his own joys, sorrows and pains as if talking to his closest friend.
